Types of breast enlargement
If you are considering breast augmentation, there are various treatment methods available. These treatment methods are: breast augmentation with implants, with body fat (lipofilling) or a hybrid augmentation. We will briefly explain the difference between these treatment methods.
Implants
The most common treatment method is the variant in which the plastic surgeon inserts breast implants (prostheses) in the breasts. These can be round or teardrop-shaped (anatomical) breast implants. Of course, we only work with controlled, medically responsible prostheses that have been approved by the Ministry of Health.
Lipofilling
A treatment that we are increasingly performing is breast enlargement by means of lipofilling. In this procedure, fat is sucked away by means of liposuction from an area where there is sufficient fat. Think of the abdomen, the flanks or the hips. This fat is then collected, purified and then injected into the breasts by means of lipofilling. However, for this procedure, there must be sufficient fat present in order to achieve a nice voluminous result. For more information about lipofilling of the breasts click here.
Hybrid augmentation
A combination of breast implants and lipofilling is called a 'hybrid augmentation'. In this case, the plastic surgeon places a breast implant and body fat is injected around the implant. This treatment method can provide a lot of volume and shape, but feels more natural than a breast enlargement with only breast implants.
You will discuss with the plastic surgeon during the first consultation which treatment method best suits your wishes and initial situation.
The process
We understand better than anyone that a plastic surgery procedure such as breast augmentation can be a drastic step. We would therefore like to explain to you how the process of breast augmentation works.
The consultation
You will come for a no-obligation consultation with a plastic surgeon of your choice. The plastic surgeon will discuss your wishes regarding the size and shape of your breasts with you. The plastic surgeon will take into account the current shape of your breasts, any asymmetry, elasticity of the skin and the location of the nipples and areola. You will choose the prostheses in consultation. These can be round or teardrop-shaped (anatomical) prostheses. We only work with controlled, medically responsible prostheses that have been approved by the Ministry of Health. The plastic surgeon also indicates where the scars of the operation will be and whether the breast prosthesis will be placed in front of or (obliquely) behind the pectoral muscle. This depends on the breast tissue present and the quality and thickness of your skin. The plastic surgeon explains the surgical risks and possible complications of breast augmentation with breast prostheses. In thispatient folder you will find more information about breast prosthesis surgery.
During the consultation, photos are taken for your medical file. It is also possible to make a Crisalix 3D simulation of the desired breast augmentation. This gives you a good impression of the expected end result.
We believe it is important that you are well informed and that you can make a well-considered choice. The advantages, but certainly also the disadvantages of an operation with breast prostheses, are therefore discussed with you. Do you have any questions? Do not hesitate to ask them.
The surgery
On the day of the operation, you report to the reception desk in our brand new operating room. There, you will be picked up by the nurse who will take you with him. Here, the plastic surgeon will mark the breasts and then the anesthetist will administer general anesthesia (narcosis), so that you will not notice anything during the operation.
During the operation, the breast prostheses are inserted in front of or (obliquely) behind the pectoral muscle. The plastic surgeon will discuss where these are placed with you during the consultation. The implants are inserted through a small incision in the fold under the breast. A cavity (pocket) is created that is large enough for the breast prosthesis to fit into. The skin is then sutured with dissolvable sutures. If necessary, a plaster bandage is applied to the breasts. After breast augmentation, you may go home the same day, under supervision.
Aftercare and recovery after a breast augmentation
The first few days after the operation it is important that you get enough rest. After a few days you can do light housework and administrative work again. Avoid heavy work and lifting for the first two weeks. You can only do sports again six weeks after the breast augmentation. This is important for a good recovery.
It goes without saying that you should be careful with the area you have had surgery on during the first few weeks. The breasts feel very tight and firm during the first few months. Over time, this will change and the breasts will feel increasingly supple and natural. The shape of the breasts will also change after the procedure.
The scars can also look a bit fiery. This fieryness disappears over the course of a year, after which they will take on the colour of the skin and become less visible. UV rays are not good for scars, they can therefore remain red for an unnecessarily long time. It is best to keep the scars covered in the first few months, so do not expose your breasts to the sun. More information and tips about the recovery period can be found here here.
After the operation, we are available 24/7 in case of emergency or urgent questions.

Frequently asked questions about breast augmentations
To be fully informed about the risks and complications, it is important that you surgical package insert from the NVPC (Dutch Association for Plastic Surgery). We also notice that there are more and more questions about BII / ASIA and that is why you will find it in these leaflets more patient information. In addition, there is one patient folder of the NVPC clearly describing everything you need to know about surgery with silicone breast implants.
Do you have a question about breast augmentations or other procedures in the chest area? You may find the answer in the questions below! Is your question not listed? Then you can call us without obligation on 020 305 5847. We are happy to help you.
Will I experience pain after surgery?
Every person experiences pain differently. Breast augmentation surgery whereby the implant is placed behind the chest wall muscle is generally experienced as more painful than when the implant is placed behind the gland tissue. You will get pain relief medication during the time that you are at our centre. If necessary, you will get a recipe for pain relief for the first few days at home. We recommend that you also have paracetamol at home.
Can I resume my sports activities after surgery?
No, you cannot resume your sports straight away. You will have to wait until about six weeks after the surgery before you resume any sports activities.
Can I decide on the size of my breasts myself?
During the consultation with the surgeon, we will discuss to what extent we can meet your wishes regarding the size of your breasts. We will consider your physique, the structure of the skin, and the available gland tissue. These factors will determine what will or will not be possible.
What is the difference between a round and an anatomically shaped implant?
The surgeon will advise you on which type of breast augmentation will be most suitable for you. For this, we will consider the shape of your breast as they are now. Round implants give the breasts a more rounded shape at the top. Anatomical implants give the breasts more volume at the bottom.
How long will I be able to enjoy my breast augmentation?
In principle, the result is permanent, but over the years, the breasts may start to sag somewhat and change their shape due to a number of factors (e.g. after pregnancy/breastfeeding, ageing, or serious weight loss). We always recommend that you wear a bra that offers good support.
What is capsular formation?
Over the years, the breasts may start to sag somewhat and change their shape due to a number of factors (e.g. after pregnancy/breastfeeding, ageing, or serious weight loss). This is why we recommend having the implants checked once every 10 to 15 years and to consult with the plastic surgeon whether they might be exchanged.
elit, sed do eiusmod tempor incididunt ut labore et dolore magna aliqua.
After how many years must the implants be replaced?
If you have no complaints, the implants do not need to be replaced. But no implant lasts a lifetime and the risk of rupture and leakage increases after a period of 10 – 15 years. Our advice is to have the prostheses checked after 10 years and to have them replaced if necessary in consultation with the plastic surgeon. In case of complaints, it is of course always advisable to make an appointment with your doctor.
Are silicones safe for my health?
So far, major scientific studies have not shown any danger to public health. We also refer you to the information about this from the NVPC, which you will find here below Part 1.
Will I still have the same sensation in my breasts as before the augmentation?
During the first period after the surgery, your breasts and/or nipples may be less sensitive than before. This usually lasts a few weeks or months. The normal sensation will generally return gradually.
Can I still breastfeed after a breast augmentation?
Yes, that is not a problem. You should bear in mind, however, that the shape of the breasts can change after pregnancy and breastfeeding due to the stretching of the skin and tissue during this period. The breasts usually return to their former shape, but in some cases a correction may be necessary to enhance the breasts again.
Is the surgery covered by my health insurance?
When you have a medical indication for breast augmentation, your health insurer may be willing to reimburse the costs for the surgery. When there is no medical indication, you will need to pay for the treatment yourself. Check our.price list.
